How to Check References and Screen a Caregiver Like a Pro

Checking references and running background checks are not just nice-to-haves—they are

absolutely essential for protecting your loved one and ensuring peace of mind. Fortunately,

these tasks are easier than you think—and you don’t have to do them alone.

Start with the basics. Always ask for at least two professional references. Then ask:

How to Check References and Screen a Caregiver

 “What was your working relationship like?”

 “Was the caregiver dependable and on time?”

 “Would you hire them again?”

Be cautious of vague or overly glowing reviews—ask for specific examples. If you’re hiring

someone privately, you’ll also want a background check to screen for criminal history or abuse

records. Many online services can help with this for a low fee.

At Caregiver Group, Inc., we go a step further. Our registry helps match families with caregivers

who have already been vetted and background-checked. Still, we encourage families to do their

own due diligence too—and we provide the tools to help. Especially if you are working with

another agency, or trying to hire caregivers on your own.

Because we’re not a caregiving agency, you get the freedom to ask your own questions and

make your own decisions—without agency-imposed restrictions. And because caregivers are

paid directly, your money goes further.
